my method: use your inner voice to "coach" yourself tell yourself to slow down, stop, focus, concentrate. if that fails go for a long walk, take a shower, walk your dog.-blurey

Continue the breathing deeply, that is a good start.
Also, get yourself a piece of paper and make a list of the things that you are actually worried about. Make a list of the things that are anxiety provoking in your life right now. THen, look over that list and see what anxieties you have are actually based in reality, and which one's you are creating.

It's not breathing deeply: it's the controlled breathing, which raises the CO2 levels, in your blood, that stops hyperventilation. If you effectively treat the anxiety which may lead to a full scale anxiety (panic) attack, you will address the cause, and not the symptom. ~~~ See anxiety treatments, at ezy build (below) in section 6. Set yourself a fixed limit for worrying about any particular subject, (say; 10, or 15 minutes) after which, resolve firmly to refuse to even consider that subject again on that day: realise and accept that to do otherwise would be counterproductive to your mental health, and enjoyment of life. Use the technique for reprogramming negative thoughts and internal monologue (self talk), on pages 2, and 2L, to help you in this: some people carry a wide rubber band in their pocket: put it on their wrist; stretch, and release, as a means of reinforcing it, and speeding up the process, re-pocketing it afterwards, but I regard this as being purely optional. Practice one of the relaxation methods on pages 2, 11, 2c, or 2i, daily, and when needed. Also, give the EFT a good tryout, to see if it helps you. There is also a version for use in public places, (if you like, you can claim to have a headache, as you massage/lightly tap your temples, but you would then be restricted to subvocalising: saying it to yourself in your mind). Section 53, and pages 2, 2.q and 2.o at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris also refer: "Even though I sometimes suffer from anxiety/panic attacks, I deeply and completely accept myself." ~~~ PANIC ATTACKS: View the techniques for control of panic attacks, in section 8, at ezy build, below. Begin by holding your breath for 5, or 10 seconds: this will give you the confidence to realise that YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR BREATHING, but not pass out, or die (your autonomic nervous system resumes breathing, if unconscious). Understand panic attacks, and what triggers them, in your life (if it is unresolved anxiety, see section 6). The paper bag method works for most people: try it. If you are fairly suggestible, the following are reliable: http://www.hypnosisdownloads.com/
Your last alternative is psychotherapy, to address its fundamental cause: read section 1, and examine the http://www.1-800-therapist.org/ website, and use the locators, and phone book. I used to suffer from panic attacks, until I questioned what had changed recently in my life, to trigger them? I suggest that you learn, then practise the controlled breathing technique, until competent, then employ it, at the very first sign of a panic attack.

I've found a low dose of Xanax tremendously helpful in controlling panic attacks. Ask your doctor. I've also been trying something called Rescue Remedy. I don't think it's made much of a difference but maybe it would work for you.

I started having panic attacks almost 10 years ago. The Doc's gave me different meds to try to "fix" this problem. They sent me to a shrink and a counselor. They put me on Effexor- the worst thing I've ever allowed to be done to me. (please read what other people are saying about this SSRI via the link below). They were all just band-aids for the problem. I will never take another SSRI as long as I live!! I spent hundreds of dollars on the Lucinda Basset tapes for panic attacks- did nothing for me- did tons of research and finally met a doctor who had a brain!!! She gave me a saliva test for adrenal fatigue. Turns out panic attacks are caused by certain deficiencies in the body such as low Epinephrine, high Cortisol, Doapamine, Serotonin. Tell your doctor to order this test for you. It is the only real way to find out what's actually wrong so that they can fix it. I swear I think doctors must be taking kick backs from the drug companies so they just keep us medicated instead of trying to fix the real problem and help us.
    Test info:
"Neuro Adrenal 1 Profile" test from Neuro Science, Inc. 373 280th street, Osceola, WI 54020 Phone: 1-888-342-7272 www.neuroadrenalinc.com
The test consists of 3 small tubes for saliva collection and opne small vial for urine. You take the test from home and then mail back to the lab with the pre-paid postage. They send the results to your doctor, who then should give you a copy. If you are deficient in any of these areas, there are vitamins, minerals you can take to help your body normalize itself. Good luck!! DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!!!!! And help spread the word.

I had a problem with panic attacks, my doctor put on meds...but my body would find different ways to produce the attacks after it adjusted to the meds. So I did some reading on the subject. One book that was very helpful was called "Don't Panic" I worked through the problems and now have control again.
