I had taken Prozac and discontinued use with doctors permission, sometimes you have to try a few which takes 6 to 8 weeks for them to take effect, if it doe's not work ask for another medication. The medication he is giving you is for depression, I don't know if that helps panic attacks you should ask the doctor questions what he is giving you and the side effects. My daughter had a horrible reaction to prozac. We now are only doing no Rx for insomnia and fatigue and pain.

We keep several things at home and rotate them as needed...such as melatonin which the Dr told us has been studied and deemed safe for teens up to 9mg per night, Calm Magnesium drink mix, Alteril which you can get from Wally world, and Serenite by Native Remedies.

We are anxiously awaiting a new natural supplement to try to help with her sleeping since I feel if she could sleep the other 2 problems would improve greatly...anyway its worth checking out, its called Zanaprin

I've just been diagnosed with severe anxiety and mild depression, and i'm having regular panic attacks.

At first I was put onto 10mg of Citalopram about six weeks ago, which my body couldn't handle, i was sick a lot, also there's a lot of side effects with it. i was on that for three weeks before my doctor and psychologist decided it was doing more harm than good.

Next, I was put on 10mg of propanol which although helped vaguely, I was on it for two weeks, it isn't entirely effective, i've found it hasn't work. Also, I have problems sleeping and horridly graphic nightmares, the propanol made the nightmares ten times worse.

Today, I've been put on 5mg of escitalopram.
apparently it has less side effects, and comes it lower doses to help your body get used to it.

Propanol is known as a beta blocker, its meant to stop the heart palpitations and slow down the rush of adrenaline which is contributing to the panic attack. Citalopram and escitalopram are both antidepressants.

To the answerer above, I always understood Effexor was a last resort type of antidepressant?

I suspect you'll be offered Citalopram, although it might be worth asking for Escitalopram (Lexapro), the new version which is supposed to have less side effects. I took Lex and it worked amazingly well for my anxiety (I have a serious case of panic disorder where during my worst phases it's like a constant severe attack that lasts for months on end). It really was very effective, but side effects forced me off. I wish I could go back on it really.

Good luck in whatever you try. there are loads of options out there so don't stress too much if you don't find success at first x

I'm going to guess that may be Effexor. I know someone that was on 75mg per day, and they had it bumped up to 150mg per day. That is one that you can not stop taking cold turkey.

I do not have panic attacks, but Zoloft 100mg has been working good for me for a long time. It helps me with anxiety.

If your dr. does not prescribe Effexor, I'd say they MAY prescribe Abilify, but that is more for depression. That may also make you very sleepy.

There are many options: beta blockers, SSRIs like the one you've already tried, benzodiazepines.

I've taken some of these mood altering drugs, and I won't try to scare you, I'll only tell you this: These drugs are quite the big deal, for you, the patient. Doctors don't think too much about them, as they've (moslty) not been on the receiving end. The ones who have are very weary of prescribing them, so what I'm trying to say is, do your homework.

Don't trust your wellbeing on just a doctor. You're responsible for your choices. Read a lot online, and go to your library. Yahoo Answers isn't the best place to find this information.

Remember, this is serious. Treat this as a serious research project, and read up all you can.
